This business works with the buying and selling of live and slaughtered horses. This business is all over Europe and has been growing since 1946. They also import fresh, chilled, and frozen horsemeat from different continents and deliver it all over Europe. They sell to wholesalers, butchers, and chain store businesses. Their production sites include Argentina, Belgium, Romania, and New Zealand. They say on their website that the horses are never stressed and are treated respectfully, with rules and regulations that protect the animals. This website and business shows how worldwide it is and where it is practiced.

Humane Slaughter Association (n.d.). Humane Slaughter Association. Retrieved March 16, 2008 from http://www.hsa.org.uk/index.htm

This website is the homepage for the only registered charity that is international, but is especially active in the United Kingdom. They educate the public, research scientific and technical advances, and work towards the highest standards of treatment for the animals that are intended for food, during their transport, marketing, and slaughter. They have won many awards and grants to enable them to continue their research. Also, they supply a lot of information on their websites about what guidelines they suggest. This group would give information on the best methods of slaughter and what countries use their information.

I disagree. We slaughter cows, pigs, chicken, buffalo, etc. and they are equally precious animals. Horses are amazing animals, I am proud to say I own my own finally, But I encourage this association. I want you to think that if, god forbid, your wonderful little mare/gelding/whatever it may be was sold at auction and sent to slaughter, would you rather he/she fall into the hands of an association like this, where they treat the animals with some dignity?, or into the hands of a cruel buisnessman with no thought to the animal's comfort? If this slaughter is necessary ( it is...) and if it will happen regardless of your opinions (it will...) Then PLEASE think of these animals and SUPPORT the few organizations that try to make it as humane as possible. Thanks for reading and please think about it. My goal is to keep support for the "good" (not entirely literal) guys instead of the inhumane slaughters!

To even say that horses and pigs are the same is ridiculus. Have you ever heard of a pig that would carry you into another town, or through a battle, or from one country to another? The answer would be a no. A cow will not do it either. So why would we kill an animal that has served us for centuries to help us and now we are showing our support by killing the very one that has helped us? Can we say "Stupid" I personally have 3 old horses one the age of 33 and she is still helping me and I could never send her off because she is "useless".

But cows have served us too. They plow our fields, pull our wagons, etc. If it wasn't for the ox (which are the same as cows) then Americans wouldn't have made it to the West. I don't necessarily approve of horse slaughter, but I agree that it is necessary. Good comment, Heather.

I completely disagree with horse slaughter honestly it should be illegal... Horses are beautiful wonderful animals and you must be really cold hearted to be able to slaughter these poor helpless animals!!!

I, myself, train and raise horses and I agree with having horse slaughter. Horse slaughter helps us keep the cull horses that aren't worth anything out of the breeding operation. I would rather horses be slaughter in the USA than in mexico because it is better regulated here. I understand that horses are noble and strong, but what do you do with a horse that has went through his usable period of life and isn't gonna be able to preform ever again? Keep him as a pasture pet? In my honest opinion horse slaughter is the most dignified way to let a horse go. I would rather send my calf roping horse to slaughter than let him starve. If i didn't have the means to take care of him then he wouldn't be here. I'm for the ethical treatment of horses and it is more humane to slaughter them where they die quickly rather than letting them starve.

But these slaughterhouses also takes in horses in the prime of their lives! Horses that have perfectly good lines and have the potential for high-class competitions! If these places would only take in the old, sick, and injured that can't be helped, and treat them with real respect, then I wouldn't care. But the way they actually treat these beloved creatures in reality is just wrong!

ok first of all i want to say i am a painter and it seems everytime
i search for reference pics i see
more and more dead/slaughterd animals. When i type tiger i get some slaughterd tigers and so on.But i guess its a normal thing these days cause nothing is done about it.any way so we eat pigs, buffalo, chickens, crocodile, snake, dogs, cats, horses, and so on.Is there anything we havent eaten yet.My question to you heather is where is it gona stop.I have heard the latest craze is animal penisses. So you dont know half the
stuff going on in this sick world.I know that we must eat but
i mean cats, dogs, horses . . . . . come on!!!!!And the worst is that we are teaching our youth that this is right. So you tell me where you think this world is heading to.Its poeple like you causing all of this.Today its fine to eat a horse, tomorrow its a tiger, lion, elefhant and then. . . .what then??????I havent even began with the fur trade. So you dont know nothing about what we are doing the animals. If you believe in god then you should change your words cause as far as i know he said to take care of his creations, not eat everything up.

This is for you kristen. So thats all that a horse means to you, just a working thing and when it cant work it should die?Wow you realy do
love animals dont you.And what do you mean by starve, you realy telling me the usa has a grass shortage?????We domesticated horses. They were wild minding their
own bussiness and we made them work for us so the least we could
do is show them respect. You are just as cold as everyone else who supports this,Did you not look at those pics, how can you look at that
at not feel anything.O and by the way,i have an idea of my next painting, you see i like my paintings to depict something thats real,so for me to paint n picture of a beautifull horse running
in the wild will be fals,so instead i will paint a beatufull picture of a horses head chopped off. . .with blood all over the walls. How does that sound? After all that is the truth isnt it.

When people no longer respect a life, be it human, or animal, they also lose their conscience. Breeders are the worst by creating life that has no meaning to them except to make them money and when they don't measure up to their standards they don't want to spend a little money to euthanize the animal but instead get a few dollars to have the animal removed from their conscience....HOW DID A KENTUCKY DERBY winner ever end up being slaughtered? I firmly believe that if you choose to eat meat then you should raise the animal from birth, treat it with respect and when it's time to slaughter the animal you should do so as humanely as possible. Unfortunately we have slaughterhouses and processing plants to do this so we don't have to see. Stunning a horse (many horses aren't stunned) hanging them by their hind legs, slicing open their throats IS NOT humane in any sense of the word. If you have a pet, be it a hampster or horse you must make a commitment to that animal from birth to death. If you cannot afford to have the animal then don't! I have a horse that was going to one of those slaughterhouses in Canada, not because he was old or sick, but only for the meat price. He had been beaten to the point that he was injured and scared nearly to death. The owners thought they could get him to do what they wanted by beating him. I don't believe we beat our cows and pigs, etc. this way. One final point is that we do raise animals for food with strict standards on how the animal will be taken care of, what it eats, how it is slaughtered and the safety and quality of the meat. HORSES are not raised as a food source, they are given supplements and a variety of drugs to enhance build and performance and when they are sent to a slaughterhouse there are no guidelines for meat testing to ensure safety. There are no guidelines for "Humanely" killing horses. Slaughter is not necessary if the owners/breeders take responsibility for what they are doing!!!!!

Fuck you Kristen!! Horse slaughter should be STOPPED!!!!!!!!!! They are more INHUMANE then with COWS!!!! Have you people who are pro-horse slaughter even LOOKED at the pictures on down this page? If you have, and you're still pro-horse slaughter, you're hopeless.

If you haven't looked at the pictures, WHY NOT? Afraid of what you might see?

If you own horses, is this what you want for them?

MY GOD!
